The Letter That Became a Proposal - ShangriLa Fiji

Some proposals are grand and elaborate. Others are quiet, deeply personal, and completely meaningful to the couple.

Jarrod and Madi’s proposal at Shangri-La Fiji was all of those things—and so much more.

Their story began with a beautiful tradition. Every year, Jarrod and Madi write a letter to one another, sharing their thoughts, memories, hopes and feelings from the year that has passed. Then, the following year, they sit down together and read the letters they wrote for each other.

It’s such a simple tradition, but there is something incredibly romantic about it. A little time capsule of their relationship, opened once a year.

And the previous year, Jarrod had written something very special in his letter: he was going to propose to Madi.

A Secret Proposal at Shangri-La Fiji

There was only one problem: Madi didn't know.

Jarrod had planned the perfect surprise, and I was lucky enough to be part of his secret plan.

It was during Fiji's wet season, and the weather forecast wasn't looking particularly promising. Rain was expected later in the afternoon, so we decided not to wait for the golden-hour sunset. Instead, Jarrod took Madi for a beautiful picnic around lunchtime, finding a secluded spot at Shangri-La where they could enjoy some quiet time together.

And that's where I came in.

My role was simple: hide behind a bush and wait.

Not exactly the most glamorous part of being a photographer, but definitely one of the most exciting!

I was tucked away, trying my best to remain completely invisible, waiting for the perfect moment.

Jarrod and Madi began reading their letters to each other, just as they had done every year.

Then Jarrod reached the end of his letter.

And that was my cue.

As soon as he finished reading the words that would change everything, Jarrod proposed.

I jumped out from behind the bush just in time to capture the moment.

Tears, Surprise and So Much Emotion

Madi's reaction was absolutely priceless.

There were tears, disbelief, emotion and that beautiful moment when everything suddenly makes sense.

After all, Jarrod had actually told her about his plans a year earlier—in a letter she had read, but perhaps never imagined would become reality quite so literally!

It was such a heartfelt proposal because it wasn't simply about a ring or a surprise. It was woven into something that was already deeply meaningful to them as a couple.

A yearly ritual. Their words. Their memories. Their promises to one another.

And now, one of those promises had come true.

Exploring Shangri-La for Their Couple Session

Once the secret was out and the tears had dried, it was time to celebrate!

We spent the rest of the session exploring the beautiful grounds of Shangri-La Fiji, creating a collection of relaxed and romantic couple portraits.

We started amongst the lush tropical greenery, making the most of the beautiful resort surroundings. The atmosphere was relaxed and playful, and after the intensity of the proposal, it was lovely to see Jarrod and Madi simply enjoying being engaged.

From there, we made our way towards the golf course, where the open landscape gave us a completely different backdrop.

And finally, we headed down to the beach.

The whole session was filled with laughter, cuddles, movement and those little in-between moments that make couple photography feel genuine rather than posed.

And Then… They Wrote Another Letter

But perhaps my favourite part of the entire story happened after the photography session was over.

Once we said goodbye, Jarrod and Madi went off to write their next letters to each other.

For the following year.

I absolutely love that.

After everything they had just experienced—the surprise proposal, the happy tears, the celebration and their beautiful afternoon together—they were already continuing the tradition.

I can only imagine what those letters will say when they eventually open them next year.

And somehow, I have a feeling that this year's letter will be particularly difficult to beat.

A Proposal That Was Completely Them

What made Jarrod and Madi's proposal so special wasn't simply the surprise. It was how personal it was.

There was no huge crowd, no elaborate production, and no pressure to perform for anyone else. Just the two of them, their letters, a secluded picnic at Shangri-La Fiji, and a secret photographer hiding behind a bush!

It was intimate, emotional, spontaneous and incredibly romantic.

And for me, that's what makes photographing proposals so special. The best photographs aren't just beautiful—they tell the story of a moment that could never happen quite the same way twice.

Jarrod and Madi, thank you for letting me hide in the bushes and be part of such a beautiful chapter in your story. ❤️
